Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas announced that the city will designate several locations around the city as warming centers for the next few days as the area battles the frigid temperatures. Temperatures are expected to dip into the teens, with wind chills as low as 20 degrees below zero.

"Temperatures are anticipated to be at dangerously low levels with the potential for intense winds, snow, and wintery weather," Thomas stated. "Warming centers are open and available for public use in several locations in the city."

The city issued several cold weather tips with temperatures continue to drop:

  • Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly and home-bound.
  • Keep animals indoors.
  • Don't overload electrical power strips.
  • Keep space heaters away from curtains, blankets, and flammable materials.
  • Don't use a stove, oven, grill, or any other open flame to heat your home. This is dangerous and can lead to fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.

The following locations will be serving as a warming center in Mount Vernon:

  • The Doles Center - 250 South 6th Ave.;
  • The Armory - 144 North 5th Ave.;
  • Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital - 12 North 7th Ave.
